On April 25, 2025, gunmen attacked a gold mining village in Zamfara State, Nigeria. The attack happened in Gobirawa Chali, a small community where people dig for gold. Witnesses said hundreds of armed men opened fire on miners, causing chaos and panic.
Residents told reporters that they found at least 21 bodies after the shooting. Many others were hurt. Amnesty International said the attackers even went from house to house and killed villagers.
Zamfara has seen many attacks by armed gangs in recent years. These gangs kidnap people for ransom and sometimes fight with security forces. They hide in remote forests, and Nigeria’s police and soldiers are stretched thin across the country.
Officials do not yet know why this attack happened. Police have not commented, and the investigation is ongoing. The violence adds to other problems in Nigeria, including an insurgency in the northeast and clashes between farmers and herders.
